This preface helps you understand more of the world of calculus. Readers will surely realise this book and that in many respects the calculus is an art rather than science. Someone trying to learn calculus for the first time could do far worse than using this work as their primer.

The book is out of copyright and available in project Gutenberg. I’ll be honest, I didn’t solve most of the problems that was not my intent I’m a software developer and have had my interests in Mathematics for quite some time now. Turns out I just hated how it was taught to me.

Changing the size of the type does not increase the thompsoh of any mathematical notation.

Although I still don’t understand calculus I really enjoyed reading this book. Of course, as the title presumes, this is a very short introduction to the basics of calculus differentiating and integratingand the book clearly has its limits.

A warning to purchasers of this book as an e-pub. Refresh and try again.

I have skipped the exercises. Gardner changes “fifth sllvanus boys” to the more American sounding and gender neutral “high school students,” updates many now obsolescent mathematical notations or terms, and uses Calcupus decimal dollars and cents in currency examples. Calculus Made Easy has long been the most popular calculus primer, and this major revision of the classic math text makes the subject at hand still more comprehensible to readers of all levels.

In the first major revision of the text sinceMartin Gardner – the ‘Mathematical Games’ columnist for Scientific American and tnompson of over 50 books and innumerable articles – has thoroughly updated the dilvanus to reflect recent developments in method and terminology, written an extensive preface and three new chapters, and added more than 20 recreational problems for practice and enjoyment.


The author does indeed present the subject in a way that is easy to understand, and in a style that is entertaining. But for someone that wants to be cleared from the misconceptions that we can have regarding calculus, this book is useful. I guess it’s understandable that Gardner wanted to do more than just change the wording given that his name is all over the cover, but he has not improved the book as far as I am concerned. If Thompson had wanted to bother with limits and epsilon-delta stuff he would have, so why drag that into the book?
